Abstract
Since laser diodes were first applied to optical video disk readout in 1976, extensive development activities have been undertaken at several places concerning laser diode pick-ups for optical disk memory systems, both in read-only and read/write applications. Laser diode application to optical disk memories has opened a new market for opto-electronic device application. This paper first describes the general features of several types of laser diode pick-ups. Secondly, details of the basic technologies used in the pick-ups are explained.
