Abstract
Platelets initiate as well as regulate the cascade of events that take place during tissue repair through haemostatic regulation and secretion of growth factors and cytokines. In the present study the effect of 830 nm diode laser on the functionality of platelets was evaluated to assess laser-induced changes in the mitochondria of platelets. Platelets isolated from fresh human blood was irradiated with varying fluences of low power laser (0.5, 1 and 2 J/cm2). The Mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) of the platelets were assessed through flow cytometry using Tetramethylrhodamine, Methyl Ester (TMRM), post-irradiation.
