Abstract
Frequency doubling a 140 × 89 mm 30 J VULCAN sub ps, chirped pulse amplified (CPA) 1.054 nm beam for laser matter interaction studies was investigated at the Central Laser Facility, with efficiencies > 50% being achieved. Interest in using the second harmonic of the CPA Nd:glass laser system arises for a number of reasons. There is a reduction of the pedestal level by virtue of the non-linear nature of the doubling process and a shorter wavelength interaction beam can be advantageous in laser-plasma experiments. For the fundamental CPA beam used during this experiment a focused target irradiation of 1019 W/cm2 has already been demonstrated [1].
