Ultrafast excited state population relaxation in femtosecond four-wave mixing experiments.

Abstract

It is now well established that the observed decays in femtosecond wave mixing experiments may show a non exponential, or even an oscillatory character in contrast to the predictions of the optical Bloch equations. One attempt to address this problem has been the development of stochastic models for relaxation processes. To date, the multimode Brownian oscillator model of Mukamel has been successfully applied to experimental results from molecules in solution. However, it is implicit with this kind of description to assume that the molecular environment stays at equilibrium. Furthermore, the temperature is not an intrinsic parameter of the model.
