In the process of searching for a simple coherent method of atomic excitation for a pulsed atomic beam with a wide velocity distribution, we have investigated both Rabi-oscillation and adiabatic transfer in an atomic two level system (He*). We report on our investigation of these excitation methods with a simple, absolute measure of the degree of atomic excitation provided by the deflected profile of the atomic beam.
