Dynamics of stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers with feedback

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

In a Brillouin diffusion process, a pump field is scattered by an acoustical wave, thus generating a counterpropagating Stokes field. When no feedback is brought to this system, the Stokes wave is seeded by spontaneous Brillouin scattering from thermally excited sound waves, and the dynamics is essentially stochastic. In the presence of feedback, the dynamic is deterministic. Various dynamical behaviours have been observed such as periodic oscillations, pulsed regimes, quasiperiodicity and chaos.
