Abstract
Spatiotemporal chaos occurs when different types of motion, excited in local regions in an extended system, interact to destroy the spatial coherence of the system concurrent with the onset of temporal chaos. Control of these systems which involve both time and space is an outstanding challenge and calls for new concepts of control to those hitherto used in controlling temporal chaos. In this report, we propose an algorithm for controlling such systems based on the idea of stabilisation of unstable periodic patterns (UPPs) in spatiotemporal chaos (turbulence). We provide a first numerical demonstration of stablisation of spatial periodic patterns embedded in turbulence in a PDE system describing a high aspect-ratio laser.
