Abstract

A laser cooling scheme for atoms with an effective three-level A configuration is presented. The cooling force is obtained by using two standing light waves each interacting only with one of the two atomic transitions. In contrast to stimulated cooling of two-level atoms1 and earlier A configuration calculations,2,3 the two standing waves are detuned red with respect to the transitions.
