Abstract

One of the most intensely discussed schemes to get amplification without inversion (AWI) is ″double lambda″ Raman type four-level schemes (Fig. 1), where an absorption cancellation by the effect of "coherent population trapping" (CPT) may occur.1 A certain small population in the highest level (4>) causes light amplification without inversion.
