Abstract
Interest in rf pumping of rare gas halide lasers stems in part from the corrosive action of halogen gas on its boundaries. This action is severe especially on metal electrodes and additionally may result in contamination of the laser gas mixture and cause early cessation of laser action. Other positive features of rf pumping include the relatively well developed state of rf power systems which results in long operating life and easily controlled pumping pulses.
