Effective temperature of optically-controlled active media

Abstract

The interaction between light and matter allows for selective excitation into nonequilibrium states. Using spatially and temporally-varying potentials in active colloidal systems we demonstrate control of diffusion and effective temperatures for particles at thermodynamic equilibrium.
