Abstract

Nonlinear optical effects in solutions are shaped not only by the optical properties of the molecules but moreover by their electric properties and mutual interactions. Optical Kerr Effect (OEK) induced by strong laser light is a source of information concerning the local structure in the solution and intermolecular interactions. This effect has been widely studied in liquid media in the nano., pico., and femtosecond time scales. Much theoretical and experimental work has been done on the optical active media applying the electric birefringence method. Similar information can be provided by measurements of optically induced birefringence which is a method much more suitable for investigation of water solution.
