New Ce-doped crystals for tunable UV lasers

Abstract

In the last few years, it has been shown that efficient, reliable and broadly tunable all-solid state lasers can be operated based on the strong 5d→4f interconfigurational vibronic UV emission transitions of trivalent cerium ions in fluoride crystals such as Ce3+:LiSAF, Ce3+:LiCAF and Ce3+:LiLuF4. However only the spectral domain between 280 and 335 nm is covered by such laser sources and because of solarisation effects induced by UV pump radiation, no other laser system has been found so far.
