Abstract

We present strongly improved results from optimized surface emitting laser diodes, which are based on a surface mode emission (SME) technique. This technique has been developed by us and can be applied to conventional horizontal cavity laser diodes to achieve an efficient surface emission with low beam divergence as well as a quasi-single-mode operation1. It is based on a coupling process between the laser mode and a TE0-surface mode propagating in a waveguide structure on top of the laser diode.
