Abstract

RF excited, fast-flow CO lasers have a high conversion efficiency (~15-30%), being 1.5-2 times that of CO2 lasers at similar powers. The shorter CO wavelength provides a smaller focal spot size, a better absorption for many materials, especially for metals, and an availability of fibre delivery.1 Recently there has been extensive development of practical high-power fast-flow CO lasers2-4 aimed at showing this type of CO laser to be a potential alternative to existing CO2 lasers for industrial uses, particularly for material processing.
