Abstract

An attractive technique to design pulsed fiber lasers can be realized by current modulation of the laser diode (LD) used as the intracavity pump source. Recently, this approach was demonstrated to mode-lock the Er-doped fiber laser due to phase modulation in the intracavity pump LD1,2 or to synchronize the relaxation oscillations.3 It was shown there that a high level of phase modulation can be obtained with a MQW LD operating at 1.48 μm. Here, we show the Q-switched operation of a Er-doped fiber laser with pump LD used as a nonlinear etalon to switch the cavity finesse.
