Abstract
A resurgence of interest in polarization mode dispersion (PMD) phenomena has accompanied proposals for commercial systems at 40 Gb/s and beyond. PMD is caused by optical birefringence. A signal propagating through a fiber with PMD experiences polarization-dependent group delay and pulse distortion, resulting in system penalties that depend on environmental changes including temperature and stress and thus vary with time and wavelength.
