Abstract

Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is emerging as the limiting impairment in high bit-rate lightwave systems, even when new fiber or a first-order PMD compensator is employed. We describe various PMD measurement methods, including a new time-domain technique, and describe the system impact of PMD.
