Abstract
Coupling between two integrated waveguides, where one waveguide has a high effective index (n ~ 3.5) and the other a low effective index (n ~ 1.5) is of interest in the fabrication of wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) sources, which can be easily coupled to optical fibers. Figure 1 shows a cross section of a WDM laser structure integrated with a fiber-like phosphorus-doped silica-glass (PSG) waveguide multiplexer with a grating, to couple the laser energy into the glass waveguide.
