Abstract
We observe electrical Barkhausen noise1 induced by photorefractive space-charge fields and by optical heating as domain holograms2 are recorded in strontium barium niobate (SBN:75). This Barkhausen noise is a displacement current associated with the creation and movement of bound charge as a ferroelectric domain switches. We also observe noise in the holographic diffraction efficiency as domains switch, which we call optical Barkhausen noise. These measurements enable us to isolate the role of photorefractive space-charge fields in the generation of dynamic and remnant ferroelectric domain gratings.
