Optically induced ferroelectric domain gratings

Abstract

Optical generation of ferroelectric domain gratings is potentially a useful technique for tailoring the nonlinear properties of ferroelectric crystals. We have described in alloptical technique for generating domain gratings1 and presented evidence to show that domain reversal is the fixing mechanism.2 We continuously reconstructed a fixed domain grating under continuous, intense illumination for seven days and estimated the grating lifetime to be at least 100 days at room temperature.1 Up to this point, however, the mechanisms responsible for the formation of the grating and the microstructure of the grating have been elusive. In this work we explore the roles of the periodic, photogenerated space charge field, bias pyroelectric field and external dc fields on the grating formation process in strontium barium niobate (SBN:75). This understanding is needed for optimizing the fixing technique of optically induced domain reversal for applications such as quasiphase matching and holographic data storage.
