Abstract

In coherent optical communication systems the number of optical channels is limited by the tuning range of the local oscillator laser. Since in this application any wavelength within the tuning range has to be met with sufficient spectral purity not only a large tuning range but also a continuous tuning characteristic is highly desirable.1 So far the largest continuous tuning range of tunable laser diodes (7 nm) has been obtained with the tunable twin-guide (TTG) laser.2 With an improved TTG structure we have extended the continuous tuning range to 11 nm.
