Polarization and phase conjugation via the Brillouin loop scheme

Abstract

We consider theoretically the loop scheme of phase conjugation, which was realized for photorefractive crystals by Feinberg1 and Cronin-Golomb et al.2 The Brillouin nonlinearity, which is of interest for us, was used in the loop scheme by Odintzov and Rogacheva3 among others. In that scheme (see Fig. 1) the incident beam A at the pump frequency ωA is passed through the Brillouin active medium and, after some reversible optical modification and amplification, is directed into the same medium as beam B of the same frequency, ωb =a- Suppose there is Brillouin scattering of the A wave into the Stokes wave C, whose phase is conjugate to B, that is, C ~ 8*, ωc = ωAv|kA – kc|= ωA – Ω; here v is the sound velocity and Ω is the Brillouin frequency shift. The propagation of the C wave through the feedback loop produces Stokes wave D, possibly amplified, in the medium. Since C~ B* and the propagation is reversible, as assumed, the desired relation D~ A* takes place. The interference of the Stokes wave D and pump wave B produces the grating δρ ~ B*D exp(iΩt). The scattering of the incident A wave by that grating produces the Stokes signal Aδρ ~ (AD) • B*. This validates the assumption that C ~ B*, since AD~ |A|2 and closes the feedback loop.
