Modeling flashlamp pumped Nd:glass disk amplifiers

Abstract

We have developed a semiempirioal model for Nd:glass disk amplifiers which substantially reduces the amount of experimental data needed to characterize fully amplifier performance. When parametrized in terms of the flashlamp output power per unit bore area (Pout/A),1 the transfer of energy from electrical input to inversion in the laser disks separates into two parts: an ideal pumping efficiency and a cavity transfer efficiency. We find that a single transfer efficiency curve accurately describes a fixed cavity geometry for a large range of input pulse lengths and energies. As a result, only a few measurements are required to predict the entire range of performance for a given amplifier configuration.
