Abstract

The transverse mode properties of a diode laser array12׳ are commonly explained in terms of supermode theory.34׳ However, this theory seems to fail to describe correctly the experimental results for high power gain-guided arrays. One objective of this paper is to present experimental data that are inconsistent with the supermode theory. Furthermore, we also propose a new perturbation model which predicts the correct mode structures and gives insight into the mechanism responsible for this modal behavior, enlightening the important role of the thermal effects.
