Abstract

Multistripe monolithic laser diode arrays are of great interest for applications requiring high power, high efficiency, narrow bandwidth optical energy. Such applications include optical power transmission, illumination and pumping of solid state laser media such as Nd:YAG. The highest cw power reported to date for a laser diode is 38 W from a 1-cm monolithic laser array with a 2-mm total aperture width.1 We report room temperature cw operation up to 55 W from a 1-cm monolithic laser array with no active cooling. We also show that a good operating lifetime (at above 7-W cw) can be obtained.
