Abstract

In recent years, laser generation and detection of ultrasound have been the subject of vigorous research, primarily for applications in the field of nondestructive evaluation. However, the optical techniques developed are still inherently less sensitive than conventional piezoelectric transducers. Progress has been made in developing more sensitive laser detectors, while Increasing system sensitivity by modification of the generating laser has received less attention. Wagner et al.1 have recently shown that by repetitively Q-switching a Nd:YAG laser during a single flashlamp pulse, a train of acoustic pulses can be generated resulting in a narrowing of the bandwidth of detected ultrasound. This paper shows that similar results can be produced by spatially modulating the incident generating laser pulse.
