Abstract

In the quest for compact high power CO2 lasers it is natural to seek to develop the existing rf excited waveguide laser technology which currently provides the highest power density and efficiency for sealed-off cw operation. Increase of the waveguide dimensions in one direction only to form a slab waveguide allows scaling of the active volume while maintaining the efficient cooling characteristic of waveguide channels. The evolution of such a slab laser involves new trends in operating parameters, output power, and beam characteristics crucial to its design and application. This paper addresses some issues particularly related to power extraction scaling.
