Large area discharge rf excited CO2 laser

Abstract

The scaling of the output power of static gas or slow-flow diffusion cooled CO2 lasers has taken a new direction through the development of the large area discharge concept, as either a planar1 or annular discharge,2 using transverse rf excitation to establish very uniform gain regions of large total volume using a single power source. The close proximity of the electrodes provides the necessary cooling by conduction in one dimension only, with the other two dimensions being available for volume and hence output power scaling.
