Abstract

Recent fiber optic applications of the bulk and integrated optic versions of the acoustooptic tunable filter1 demonstrated its unique capability for all-electronic broad tunability (1.3–1.58µm),2 narrow channel spacing (13 Ǻ),3 and moderately fast switching speeds (a few microseconds). Furthermore, the integrated acousto-optic tunable filter (IATOF)4 exhibits the additional advantages of low rf power consumption and the potential for more complex integration. The low rf power requirement allows one to perform multiple wavelength selection by driving the IATOF with multiple radio frequencies,3 providing greater flexibility in network design.
