Abstract

Frequency stabilization of transmitter lasers is an important issue in densely spaced direct detection and coherent multichannel communication systems. We report here on an experiment using an FM laser for relative frequency stabilization. The FM sidebands of the master laser are uniformly spaced, and the spacing is determined exactly by the driver rf which can be accurately controlled. Previous work on frequency stabilization using FM sidebands1 employed injection locking. In contrast, our technique uses heterodyne detection and an electrical automatic feedback loop (AFC). The advantages of our approach are as follows:
