Efficient rotational Raman conversion in hydrogen, deuterium, and hydrogen/deuterium mixes using a phase conjugate pump laser

Abstract

Since 1966, stimulated rotational Raman scattering (SRRS) has been explored by a large number of investigators with a variety of pump lasers. Recently, in Nov. 1988, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) reported good efficiency of conversion in hydrogen using a 532-nm pump laser. Using a similar optical configuration, we demonstrated higher efficiency in using SRRS for the conversion of a 532-nm pump laser to multiple lines in the visible portion of the spectrum. Our aim In this work was to both achieve efficient energy conversion of the pump laser into the Raman shifted lines and generate the largest possile wavelength spread. We performed a comparison of the SRRS efficiency using hydrogen, deuterium, and a mixture of the two gases. Gur experiment consisted of a 1.08-pm pump laser utilizing phase conjugation to maintain good beam quality and uniformity. The 1.06-μm output was frequency doubled using a CD*A crystal, the residual 1.06- μm energy was filtered out, and the doubled 532-nm output was used as the pump for the SRRS experiments. The Raman shifted output was dispersed using three prisms in series, and the energy at each wavelength was measured using a calibrated photodiode detector. The experimental setup is shown in Fig. 1.
