Dispersionless transmission and compression of chirped 1.3-μm DFB ps laser pulses in dispersion shifted single-mode fibers

Abstract

Optical wavelength chirping of gain switched or high speed modulated DBF semiconductor lasers has been a subject of concern for fiber transmission1-3; the chirp-induced dispersion penalty is one of the important factors that may limit the high speed transmission span of a DFB laser signal. Several methods of reducing the chirping have been suggested in the past. An entirely different approach, instead of trying to eliminate the chirp, is to control the chirp and use it to advantage in fiber transmission.
