Abstract

High speed, low chirp light sources are essential devices for future transmission systems. An optical intensity modulator monolithically integrated with a DFB laser is expected to be such a light source.1-3 However, until now the integrated device capable of being tested under large signal, high speed modulation has not been realized because of poor optica! coupling or low output power. We have fabricated an intensity modulator monolithically integrated with a DFB laser which demonstrates good dynamic characteristics under 5-Gbit/s NRZ modulation.
