Abstract
It is well known that index-guided Fabry-Perot cavity-type semiconductor-injection lasers show a mode-hopping phenomenon when the ambient temperature or driving current changes. Since such a phenomenon causes excess intensity noise in the laser output, it has been considered significant. However, from the viewpoint of an application of the mode-hopping phenomenon, it has a potential ability to perform a new optoelectronic logic operation because the output wavelengths of a laser diode oscillator can be switched reproducibly due to mode-hopping as the driving current is varied, provided the ambient temperature is precisely controlled. In addition, since mode-hopping often shows hysteresis in the relation of the hopped wavelengths to the driving current it may also perform a memory operation. We propose and demonstrate new optoelectronic logic operations including AND, OR, NOR, EXCLUSIVE OR, and INVERTER as well as a memory operation, which are based on the mode-hopping schemes in semiconductor-injection lasers.
