Abstract

Continuous tuning of a CO2 laser by phase modulation at microwave frequencies in GaAs thin-film waveguides has been reported.1 In optical wave guides, extremely intense optical and microwave fields can be established, provided that special techniques are used to couple optical and micro waves efficiently into the device. If these two waves are properly synchronized with nearly the same phase velocity, very efficient and broadband modulation can be achieved. Phase modulation of CO2 lasers at microwave frequencies with linear polarization will generate both the upper fu and lower f1 sideband frequencies, which can be well resolved from the laser carrier frequency f0.
