Continuously Tunable Sum-Frequency Generation Involving Sodium Rydberg States

Abstract

There is currently great interest in sum-frequency generation as a means of producing tunable ultraviolet radiation. Most of the mixing processes that have been demonstrated thus far make use of a third-order or χ(3) optical nonlinearity, in which case three input fields combine to produce the output frequency. To avoid the inconvenience of using three separate laser sources, at least one of the intermediate steps of this mixing process is usually nonresonant, which limits the efficiency with which the ultraviolet frequency can be produced.
