Abstract

The required conditions for a compensation of the fluctuating phase distortion in a transmission line by optical phase conjugation are analyzed, and the resulting possible transmission length is estimated. The effective compensation of the phase fluctuation is demonstrated by using a phase-modulated phase-conjugate wave generated by four-wave mixing in a semiconductor laser amplifier, and a modulation index suppression of -4 dB is achieved.
