Abstract
This paper discusses the results of an investigation of the possibility of protecting optical observation facilities from damage by pulsed laser irradiation by using passive optical shutters with a response time no greater than 1 ns. The shutter’s active element is a thin metallic mirror film located at the intermediate focal plane of the system and locally evaporated at the instant of irradiation.
