Evidence for a new optical element in insect visual systems

Abstract

We present a model of the cone element in insect ommatidia based on recent developments in the theory of tapering graded-index media. A comparison with experimental results for a butterfly indicates that light-guiding graded-index tapers may be a component of insect visual systems.
