Abstract

The improvement of liquid-crystal display performance is an area of great interest, in both theoretical and practical terms. I argue that any complete optimization in the large parameter spaces involved will require, at least as a first step, an accurate and efficient numerical model of the display at the pixel level. I present a general and flexible way of quantifying display performance in terms of application-specific metric functions depending on various characteristics of the display function chosen to be important, and I recast display optimization in terms of the search for the extrema of these metrics. This allows us to search the parameter space in a much more efficient and systematic manner. Applications are discussed and results presented.
