Relation between phase and group indices in anisotropic inhomogeneous guiding media

Abstract

A relationship is derived between phase and group indices of a mode in anisotropic inhomogeneous guiding media. The relation is applied to the modes in a three-layered biaxially anisotropic waveguide, and it is shown that there exists an upper bound to the group index.
