Abstract
A technique is described by means of which Zeeman patterns distorted by hyperfine structure have been analyzed to yield accurate gJ values. A repetitive procedure is used together with intermediate field matrices to determine the variation with gJ value of the splittings of a chosen state. The Zeeman pattern, deduced from two such calculations, is compared with the observed pattern, enabling the latter to be accurately analyzed. An example from the Am i spectrum is described in detail.
