Starting from equations derived by use of the Kubelka-Munk theory giving general expressions for reflectance, reflectivity, and transmittance of inhomogeneous diffusing layers, a means is given to form simple algebraic interrelations between these measurable quantities. It is shown that, in contrast to homogeneous media, equation systems for nonhomogeneous layers cannot be solved for the scattering and absorbing properties even in the simplest case, that of a dual combination of sublayers. Finally, it is pointed out that if the diffusing system is composed of well-defined layers, the interreflections between these layers are a potential source of error, even if the surface reflections of the sublayers are so low that their influence is not detectable by deviations from the Kubelka-Munk theory.
