Abstract
Displacement of the air from the optical path of a Beckman IR2T spectrophotometer by helium was found to result in an increase in the current of the Nernst glower and a displacement of the wavelength calibration of the instrument. The former was attributable to the greater thermal conductivity of helium, while the latter resulted from its lower index of refraction. It was found possible to evaluate the refractive index of other gases from the observed displacements in the wavelength calibration of the instrument.
