Abstract

Transmission characteristics of NaCl and KBr plates, ground with various abrasives or etched by a solvent, have been investigated between 2 and 25 microns for use as infra-red filters and absorption cell windows. Low transmissions are obtainable with these plates in the high energy region of the blackbody maximum without appreciable decrease in their transparency at longer wave-lengths. Simple, dry grinding with the finer abrasives produces windows for absorption cells, which, in spite of visible scratches, are as transparent in the infra-red as windows tediously prepared on the usual pitch or cloth lap.
