Abstract

Measurements of the penetration of visible solar radiation into the waters of the San Juan Archipelago have been made at several stations, and absorption coefficients computed from the measurements. The data reported include three spectral bands: One from 6000A to 7000A with nearly constant transmission throughout this band; the second from 5000A to 5900A with a definite maximum at 5400A; and a third from 4100A to 5000A with a maximum at 4650A. The illumination beneath the surface was measured with a calibrated photronic cell thus giving quantitative comparison of the intensities of different parts of the spectrum at different depths. In some cases the variation was exponential but not in all. Evidence of microscopic life on the penetration of light is indicated. The illumination has been measured to depths of 50 meters in the inshore waters.
