Abstract
When one is given the opportunity to present his ideas on what the ideal infrared spectrophotometer should be like, he finds himself in a position analogous to that of a little boy seated on the lap of a department store Santa Claus, cataloging his heart's desire and knowing only that the sky is the limit. Like this child's list, ours may include many suggestions which will appear difficult or impossible to effect. However, in this presentation the point of view will be taken that the past ingenuity and astounding accomplishments of the instrument makers constitute reasons for a high level of expectation on the part of the users.
