Abstract
The existence of a surface orientation layer in glass fiber was proved by a modified FT-IR diffuse reflectance spectroscopic technique. Glass fibers were arranged parallel to each other. Samples were put perpendicular and parallel to incident radiation. The relative intensity changes of reflection spectra show evidence for molecular orientation on the surface of glass fibers which have been cooled rapidly from high temperature, and for the removal of this layer by etching or annealing.
