Polarized FT-IR Spectra of Benzene and Anthracene Oriented in a Nematic Liquid Crystal Solvent

Abstract

Polarized FT-IR spectra have been obtained for benzene and anthracene oriented in a nematic liquid crystal solvent (Merck 1132) and allow vibrational symmetry assignments to be proposed for those fundamentals detected in the mid-IR region of the dichroic spectra. The symmetry assignments proposed for anthracene are in excellent agreement with those from earlier, technically more difficult, single-crystal IR transmission measurements.
